You fold the receipt into smaller and smaller squares as the queue shuffles forward. It’s your third shift at the transit hub’s underlevel, where the air smells of synthetic lemon cleaner and damp wool. The receipt is from a vendor who doesn’t exist on any map—just a stall selling pre-banquettes snacks to travelers stuck between delayed trains. The numbers on the receipt don’t add up. They never do.
Your task is to reconcile these phantom transactions. Temporary work, the posting said. Data integrity specialist (2 weeks). You’re here to audit the favors exchanged in the Weighing Room, where people trade hours, goods, and silence like currency. The scale at the center of the room is a brute thing: cast iron, its enamelled numbers chipped, a cracked digital display flickering below a sign that reads Accuracy is Trust.
“Your turn,” says the man in front of you, gesturing to the scale. His coat smells of wet newsprint. You place your package—a bundle of unopened tea bags meant for a neighbor—on the platform. The display blinks [——].
“It’s stuck,” you say.
“Always is,” he says, not unkindly. “Needs a name.”
You frown. The scale’s manual (a single laminated page tucked under its base) says nothing about names. Just recalibration codes and a warning about overloading. But the regulars know better. You’ve watched them: a mother whispering “For the girl with the red boots” before the scale spits out a weight; a man muttering “Debt to the third locker” as the numbers resolve.
You try “For Mrs. Okoro”—your neighbor, the one who watered your plants during the blackout last month. The display flickers but stays blank.
“Not that kind of name,” says the man in the newsprint coat. “The real one.”
You glance at the queue. Five people wait, their postures tight with the morality of waiting. A queue here is a contract: no cutting, no questions, but also no lies. If the scale demands truth, it’ll come from you or someone else.
You think of Mrs. Okoro’s habit of leaving ripe mangoes on your doorstep, her refusal to take your cash for the plants. How she mentioned, once, that her son works in “systems maintenance” for the transit authority. How he might, or might not, have access to the vault where delayed passengers’ luggage sits unclaimed for weeks.
“Try ‘For the one who counts the uncounted,’” the man suggests.
You hesitate. The phrase feels like a password. But the scale needs something yours.
“For the woman who measures more than she says,” you say finally.
The display buzzes, then settles on 3.2 kg.
The man nods. “Good weight.”
You retrieve your package, but the scale’s voice—mechanical, certain—stops you.
“Correction: 5.7 kg.”
A gasp ripples through the queue. The true weight, always higher.
Mrs. Okoro’s face appears in your mind, her careful smiles. You’ve misjudged her generosity, or her need. She’s not a retiree growing orchids on a windowsill. She’s an accountant for the underground favor bank, weighing debts in bulk. Your tea bags are payment for something you didn’t know you owed.
The scale waits.
You could demand a recount. You could walk away. But the queue holds its breath, and the man behind you shifts his package—a dented toolbox, probably stolen—and you remember the mangoes, the plants, the way Mrs. Okoro’s hands tremble when she thinks no one’s looking.
You press the Accept button. The receipt prints. 5.7 kg | PAID IN FULL.
As you step back, the newsprint man leans in. “You’ll learn,” he says. “The scale doesn’t care what you know. Only what you’ll say.”
Later, you’ll knock on Mrs. Okoro’s door with a new package, this one heavier with questions. But for now, the queue moves, and the smell of toner and rain gear wraps around you like a verdict.
